Introduction
Until
now there has existed no complete edition of the writings and letters of Leibniz;
scholarly research is dependent on inadequate partial editions from the nineteenth
century. The publication of the Complete Writings and Letters (the Academy
Edition) is in hand. Leibniz-Archiv Hannover is publishing series I (general
political and historical correspondence), III (mathematical, scientific and
technical correspondence) and VII (mathematical writings) of the Academy Edition.
Series II (philosophical correspondence) and VI (philosophical writings) are
being published by the Leibniz-
Forchungsstelle (Leibniz Research Center) Münster, series IV (political
writings) by the Leibniz-
Editionsstelle (Leibniz Editorial Center) Potsdam, and series VIII (scientific
and technical writings) by the
Leibniz-Editionsstelle (Leibniz Editorial Center) Berlin. Work on series
V (historical writings and linguistic writings) has not yet commenced.
The Leibniz editorial centers have a common
web site on which information can be found in particular about volumes of
the Academy Edition already published as well as about those in progress.
Organisation
Leibniz-Archiv is a part of the State Library of Lower Saxony, Hannover. It
was set up in 1962. The Leibniz Edition is supervised by the
Göttinger Akademie der Wissenschaften (Goettingen Academy of Sciences)
and the Berlin-Brandenburg Akademie der Wissenschaften (Berlin-Brandenburg Academy
of Sciences). The members of the steering committee are:
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Künne (Hamburg) (president)
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Mittelstraß (Konstanz)
Prof. Dr. Samuel J. Patterson (Göttingen)
Prof. Dr. Hans Poser (Berlin)
Prof. Dr. Ludwig Siep (Münster)
Leibniz's Collection of Manuscript Papers
The collection of manuscript papers of Leibniz encompasses about 50,000 items,
or 150,000 to 200,000 sheets. These include about 15,000 letters from and to
about 1100 correspondents. About 40% is written in Latin, about 35% in French
and the rest mostly in German. The collection is managed by the Manuscripts
Department of the State Library of Lower Saxony.
